Bokashi Fermentation โ FarmPal
Japanese fermentation method that pre-digests ALL kitchen waste including meat, dairy, and cooked food. Anaerobic process using inoculated bran. Perfect complement to traditional composting.
Time to Finish
2 weeks fermentation + 2-4 weeks soil burial
Space Needed
Two 5-gallon buckets on kitchen counter
๐ข Greens (Nitrogen)
- โข ALL kitchen waste including meat, dairy, bones
- โข Cooked food
- โข Small amounts of oil/grease
- โข Wilted flowers
๐ค Browns (Carbon)
- โข Bokashi bran (inoculated with effective microorganisms)
Steps
- 1Layer food waste in airtight bokashi bucket
- 2Sprinkle generous handful of bokashi bran over each layer
- 3Press down to remove air pockets keep it anaerobic
- 4Drain "bokashi tea" from spigot every 2-3 days (powerful fertilizer, dilute 100:1)
- 5When bucket is full, seal and ferment for 2 weeks
- 6Bury fermented material in garden trench or add to compost pile
- 7Soil organisms finish the job in 2-4 weeks
Troubleshooting
โ Blue/black mold
โ Contamination not enough bran, or lid wasn't airtight. Start over.
โ White mold
โ This is GOOD! White mold means healthy fermentation.
โ Strong rotten smell
โ Should smell pickled/sour, not putrid. More bran needed, ensure airtight seal.
Tips
- ๐กThe ONLY composting method that handles meat, dairy, and cooked food
- ๐กBokashi tea is incredibly potent use immediately, diluted heavily
- ๐กTwo-bucket rotation system means continuous processing
- ๐กMake your own bokashi bran: wheat bran + molasses + EM-1 culture + water, fermented 2 weeks
- ๐กRecent research shows bokashi significantly increases beneficial soil microorganism populations
