Sheet Mulching (Lasagna Composting) — FarmPal
Build new garden beds directly on top of grass or weeds. Layers of cardboard, compost, and mulch create rich soil while smothering existing vegetation. No digging, no tilling.
Time to Finish
3-6 months (or plant immediately in pockets)
Space Needed
Any size from raised beds to entire yards
🟢 Greens (Nitrogen)
- • Compost
- • Manure
- • Kitchen scraps
- • Fresh grass clippings
- • Green leaves
🟤 Browns (Carbon)
- • Cardboard (remove tape/staples)
- • Newspaper (8-10 sheets)
- • Straw
- • Dried leaves
- • Wood chips (top layer)
Steps
- 1Mow existing vegetation as short as possible (don't remove)
- 2Lay overlapping cardboard (6" overlap minimum) directly on ground
- 3Wet cardboard thoroughly it should be dripping wet
- 4Add 2-4 inches of nitrogen-rich material (compost, manure)
- 5Add 4-8 inches of carbon-rich material (straw, leaves)
- 6Repeat layers if desired (more layers = richer soil)
- 7Top with 3-4 inches of wood chip mulch or straw
- 8Water deeply and wait, or cut holes to plant immediately
Troubleshooting
⚠ Weeds growing through
✓ Cardboard wasn't overlapping enough, or not wet enough to mold to ground. Add another layer.
⚠ Settling too fast
✓ Normal add more material as it compresses. Start thicker than you think.
⚠ Dry inside layers
✓ Water deeply and slowly. Straw mulch on top helps retain moisture.
Tips
- 💡Fall is the best time to sheet mulch it decomposes over winter, ready for spring planting
- 💡For immediate planting: cut X in cardboard, fill pocket with compost, plant transplant
- 💡Charles Dowding's no-dig method is essentially refined sheet mulching yields match or beat tilled beds
- 💡2025 research confirms no-till/sheet mulch methods preserve mycorrhizal networks that boost plant nutrition
- 💡Can convert entire lawns to food production with zero tilling
