Rammed Earth — FarmPal
Earth compacted into removable formwork to create dense, load-bearing walls with beautiful stratified layers. Modern rammed earth can include cement stabilization for extra strength. Used in major commercial and residential projects worldwide.
History
Used for 7,000+ years. Sections of the Great Wall of China are rammed earth. The Alhambra in Spain. Modernized in Australia (David Easton, SIREWALL).

Materials
Sandy-clay earth (ideal: 70% sand, 30% clay)
Optional: 6-10% Portland cement for stabilization
Formwork lumber or steel
Rebar or bamboo reinforcement
Linseed oil sealer
Build Steps
- 1Build concrete strip or rubble trench foundation
- 2Erect formwork (similar to concrete forms) 18-24" wall thickness
- 3Add moistened earth in 4-6" lifts
- 4Compact each lift with pneumatic or hand tamper until ringing sound
- 5Continue lifting and tamping until form is full
- 6Strip formwork after 24 hours (immediate for stabilized)
- 7Move forms to next section and repeat
- 8Install bond beam at top of walls
- 9Apply penetrating sealer to exterior (linseed oil or siloxane)
- 10Interior walls can be left raw for stunning exposed finish
✓ Pros
- •Stunning natural aesthetics
- •Extremely durable
- •Excellent thermal performance
- •Low embodied energy
- •Fire/pest proof
- •Commercial code acceptance growing
✗ Cons
- •Formwork complexity and cost
- •Labor intensive compaction
- •Heavy needs strong foundation
- •Not ideal for very wet climates without cement
⚠️ Warnings
- •Formwork is the most expensive/complex part plan carefully
- •Unstabilized rammed earth is vulnerable to prolonged water contact
- •Proper drainage around foundation is critical
- •Walls are extremely heavy foundation must be sized accordingly
