Sod House / Dugout — FarmPal
Homes built from blocks of prairie sod (grass and root mass) stacked like bricks, or partially dug into hillsides. The iconic pioneer dwelling of the American Great Plains. The dense root mass holds blocks together and provides insulation.
History
Built by Great Plains settlers from 1860s-1910s when timber was unavailable. Immigrant Scandinavians brought turf-building traditions from Iceland and Norway. Some sod houses survived 100+ years.
