Solar Water Heating (Thermal) — FarmPal
Use the sun to heat water directly far more efficient than converting to electricity first. A well-built solar water heater can provide 60-80% of hot water needs year-round with simple, DIY-friendly technology.
How It Works
Dark-colored collectors absorb solar heat and transfer it to water or antifreeze circulating through tubes. Heated fluid moves to an insulated storage tank (by thermosiphon naturally or with a pump). Hot water is available from the tank when needed.
Site Requirements
- •South-facing roof or ground area for collectors
- •Location for insulated storage tank (often in utility room)
- •Plumbing connections to existing water heater (backup)
- •Structural support for collector weight (5-10 lbs/sq ft with water)

Sizing Guide
Size based on hot water consumption and solar resource
DIY Steps
Paint a tank black, place in an insulated box with glass top, plumb to cold water inlet. Sun heats the tank directly. Use hot water in afternoon/evening.
Build a flat plate collector and mount BELOW the storage tank. Hot water naturally rises from collector to tank without any pump.
Collector on roof, tank inside, pump circulates antifreeze through a heat exchanger. Controller turns pump on when collector is hotter than tank.
✓ Pros
- •Simplest renewable energy technology DIY-friendly
- •Solar thermal is 3-4x more efficient than solar PV for heating water
- •Very low cost DIY ($50-500)
- •Reduces hot water bills 60-80%
- •Long lifespan (20-30 years for copper systems)
⚠️ Safety
- •Water can reach scalding temperatures (160°F+) install tempering valve
- •Pressure relief valve is essential on any closed system
- •Antifreeze must be food-grade propylene glycol (not ethylene glycol)
- •Roof work requires fall protection
