Benefits

  • •Eliminates toxic chemicals in commercial candles
  • •Uses homestead beeswax or renders kitchen tallow
  • •Reduces dependence on store-bought goods
  • •Makes meaningful gifts
  • •Provides light during power outages

Steps

1
Choose Your Wax

Different waxes have different properties. Beeswax from your hives, soy for vegan option, or tallow rendered from cooking.

  • 💡 Beeswax: hardest, longest burning, natural honey scent
  • 💡 Soy: clean burning, holds fragrance well, renewable
  • 💡 Tallow: traditional, free from cooking, may need refinement for clean burn
2
Gather Equipment

Double boiler setup, thermometer, molds or containers, and properly sized wicks.

  • 💡 Never melt wax over direct heat fire risk
  • 💡 Wick size must match container diameter
  • 💡 Metal/glass containers work well; avoid plastic
3
Prepare Wicks and Molds

Secure wicks in center of containers before pouring. Prime wicks by dipping in melted wax.

  • 💡 Wick tabs and centering devices help
  • 💡 Dip wicks in wax and straighten before securing
  • 💡 Pre-heat containers for better adhesion
4
Melt and Pour

Heat wax to appropriate temperature, add fragrance if desired, and pour into prepared containers.

  • 💡 Beeswax melts at 145-147°F
  • 💡 Add essential oils at 140°F just before pour
  • 💡 Pour slowly to avoid air bubbles
5
Cure and Trim

Allow candles to cure for proper burn performance. Trim wicks before burning.

  • 💡 Cure 24-48 hours before burning
  • 💡 Trim wicks to 1/4 inch
  • 💡 First burn should form complete melt pool

Tools Needed

Double boiler or wax melter
Candy thermometer
Pouring pot
Wicks and wick tabs
Containers or molds
Essential oils (optional)
Wick centering device

⚠️ Safety

  • •Melting wax is extremely flammable never leave unattended
  • •Never add water to melting wax steam explosion risk
  • •Work in well-ventilated area
  • •Keep fire extinguisher nearby
Seasonal Notes
Beeswax available after honey harvest. Tallow from fall meat processing. Cool weather is easier for candle making.
