Benefits

  • •Create clothing and textiles from farm-raised fiber
  • •High-value product from sheep/goat/alpaca fleece
  • •Meditative and deeply satisfying craft
  • •Heritage skill preservation
  • •Fiber sells for 10-50x raw fleece price as yarn

Steps

1
Source and Prepare Fiber

Obtain raw fleece from sheep, goat, alpaca, or plant fiber. Wash (scour) wool to remove lanolin and dirt. Pick out vegetable matter. Card or comb fiber to align it for spinning.

  • 💡 Buy a raw fleece from a local shepherd much cheaper than processed
  • 💡 Scour in hot water with dish soap don't agitate or it will felt
  • 💡 Hand cards or drum carder prepare fiber for spinning
2
Learn to Spin

Start with a drop spindle ($15-30) before investing in a spinning wheel. Draft fiber from prepared roving while adding twist. Practice makes yarn.

  • 💡 Drop spindle is cheapest way to start
  • 💡 Thick, lumpy yarn is normal at first it's "art yarn"!
  • 💡 Spin consistently before worrying about thin yarn
3
Ply and Finish Yarn

Ply two or more singles together for balanced, strong yarn. Set the twist by soaking in warm water. Skein and dry.

  • 💡 2-ply is standard, 3-ply is rounder and stronger
  • 💡 Whack wet skein against counter to set twist (really!)
  • 💡 Label with fiber type, weight, and yardage
4
Create with Your Yarn

Knit, crochet, or weave your handspun yarn into finished goods. Handspun has unique character that commercial yarn cannot replicate.

  • 💡 Simple projects show off handspun best
  • 💡 Sell at fiber festivals and farmers markets for premium prices
  • 💡 Hand-knit items from farm-raised fiber tell a complete story
