Establishing a Food Forest — FarmPal
Create a self-sustaining, productive ecosystem that mimics natural forest patterns with edible plants.
Time Required
3-7 years to initial productivity, 10+ years to maturity

Benefits
- •Produces food with minimal ongoing maintenance
- •Builds soil and sequesters carbon
- •Provides habitat for beneficial insects and wildlife
- •Reduces need for irrigation once established
- •Polyculture resilience against pests and climate
Steps
1
Design in Layers
Food forests have 7 layers: canopy trees, understory trees, shrubs, herbaceous, ground cover, vines, and root crops.
- 💡 Start with the canopy layer and work down
- 💡 Consider mature size of trees
- 💡 Leave access paths for harvesting
2
Select Appropriate Species
Choose plants suited to your climate that serve multiple functions: food, nitrogen-fixing, wildlife habitat, mulch production.
- 💡 Include at least 3 nitrogen-fixing species
- 💡 Choose disease-resistant varieties
- 💡 Include plants for all seasons
3
Prepare the Site
Sheet mulch to kill grass and build soil. Install water catchments and swales for passive irrigation.
- 💡 Sheet mulch in fall for spring planting
- 💡 Swales capture rainwater and direct to plant roots
- 💡 Add compost and organic matter generously
4
Plant in Guilds
Create plant guilds: a central tree surrounded by complementary plants that support each other.
- 💡 Apple guild: comfrey, clover, garlic chives, nasturtiums
- 💡 Nitrogen fixers near heavy feeders
- 💡 Dynamic accumulators bring up deep minerals
5
Manage and Observe
The first years require more management. Observe what thrives and what struggles, and adjust.
- 💡 Mulch heavily food forests are largely self-mulching once mature
- 💡 Prune to maintain access and productivity
- 💡 Chop and drop to cycle nutrients
Tools Needed
Design paper and plant lists
Sheet mulching materials
Digging tools for swales
Trees and plants (or seeds for propagation)
Water source for establishment
Mulch lots of mulch
⚠️ Safety
- •Know which plants are edible vs ornamental
- •Some food forest plants are toxic in parts or stages
- •Consider allergens (nut trees)
- •Plan for wildlife that will be attracted
Seasonal Notes
Plant trees in dormant season. Sheet mulch in fall. Observe through all seasons before finalizing design.
