Wildfire-Resilient Homestead Design — FarmPal

With wildfire seasons growing longer and more intense across the western US, homestead design must incorporate defensible space, fire-resistant construction, and emergency planning. Natural building materials like earth, stone, and lime are inherently fireproof.

Principles

  • Defensible space: Zone 0-5 ft (non-combustible), Zone 5-30 ft (lean/clean), Zone 30-100 ft (reduced fuel)
  • Earthen walls (cob, rammed earth, adobe) are fireproof they ARE earth
  • Metal roofs with enclosed eaves are critical 90% of home ignitions start on the roof or in vents
  • Ember intrusion is the #1 ignition source screen all vents with 1/8" metal mesh
  • Water storage (pond, tanks) serves dual purpose: irrigation AND fire suppression
  • Access: two routes in/out, roads wide enough for fire trucks (20 ft minimum)
  • Livestock evacuation plan must be practiced before fire season

Action steps

  1. Create defensible space zones

Zone 1 (0-5 ft from structure): non-combustible materials only gravel, stone, concrete. Zone 2 (5-30 ft): irrigated green lawn or low ground cover, no shrubs against walls, remove dead vegetation weekly. Zone 3 (30-100 ft): thin trees to 10 ft spacing, remove ladder fuels (low branches), mow grass to 4".

  2. Harden the structure

Metal roof (standing seam preferred). Enclosed eaves and soffits (no gaps). 1/8" metal mesh on all vents. Tempered or double-pane windows. Non-combustible siding (earth plaster, fiber cement, metal, stone). Covered gutters or no gutters.

  3. Install water infrastructure

Minimum 2,500-gallon water tank with fire hose connection (1.5" NST fitting). Gravity-fed from uphill if possible. Pond with portable pump provides additional suppression capacity. Keep gas-powered pump maintained and tested monthly during fire season.

  4. Plan animal evacuation

Trailer always connected or ready during fire season. Halters, leads, and carriers pre-staged. Practice loading under stress. If evacuation impossible: open gates to large pasture away from structures animals self-preserve better than confined animals.

Benefits

  • Dramatically reduces wildfire risk to structures
  • Natural building materials provide inherent fire resistance
  • Water infrastructure serves irrigation AND fire suppression
  • Insurance availability and cost improve with defensible space
  • Peace of mind in fire-prone areas
