Zone & Sector Analysis — FarmPal

The core permaculture planning tool. Zones organize elements by frequency of use (Zone 0-5), while sectors map external energy flows (sun, wind, water, fire, wildlife). Together they create efficient, energy-smart farm layouts.

Principles

  • Zone 0: The home center of activity, energy efficiency focus
  • Zone 1: Intensive garden, herb spiral, chicken coop visited daily
  • Zone 2: Orchard, main crops, compost, larger animal housing visited often
  • Zone 3: Main crops, pasture, farm ponds, food forest occasional management
  • Zone 4: Semi-managed woodland, foraging areas, extensive grazing
  • Zone 5: Wilderness observe, learn, and let nature teach
  • Sectors: Map sun arc, prevailing wind, water flow, fire risk, noise, and wildlife corridors

Action steps

  1. Map your site base plan

Create a scale map showing buildings, roads, water features, existing trees, slopes, and property boundaries. Use graph paper or free software like QGIS.

  2. Overlay sector analysis

Draw arrows for: summer & winter sun arcs, prevailing winds (summer & winter), water flow (surface & underground), fire risk direction, noise sources, and wildlife corridors.

  3. Design zones outward from home

Place the most-visited elements closest to your door. Herb garden by the kitchen. Chicken coop on daily path. Orchard just beyond. Pasture further out.

  4. Stack functions at zone boundaries

Hedgerows between zones serve as windbreaks, wildlife corridors, food sources, and privacy screens stacking multiple functions in one element.

  5. Test with a trial season

Live with your design for one season before making permanent changes. Adjust based on actual use patterns.

Benefits

  • Reduces daily walking and labor dramatically
  • Maximizes energy efficiency
  • Harnesses natural forces instead of fighting them
  • Creates logical organization for complex properties
